In Perspective

The goal of emotional intelligence training at the Center for Congregational Health, Inc.® is to help leaders perceive, utilize, understand and manage emotion in the context of leadership. Congregational leaders who possess emotional intelligence are able to appropriately blend thinking and feeling in the practice of ministry. Emotional intelligence has a huge impact on an individual’s ability to form and maintain effective relationships, and it plays a vital role in how we respond to and manage conflict.

Our philosophy is that clergy and lay leaders who can gauge and manage their own emotions, read them accurately in others, and use emotions to lead, teach and motivate will be more healthy and effective. Some experts believe emotional intelligence is a better predictor of life success than IQ. The good news is that, unlike IQ, emotional intelligence can increase with training.

The Center provides emotional intelligence testing to help individuals determine their strengths and weaknesses. Based on that information, we provide one on one and small group training to develop and practice emotional intelligence skills.

Our workshops can be specifically designed for client needs ranging from a brief overview presentation to multi-day in-depth instruction. They address topics such as

  • Emotional intelligence assessment
  • Strategies for improving emotional intelligence
  • Learning to integrate thinking and feeling for effective decision making
  • Understanding how emotions impact ministry and congregational life
  • Understanding the links between emotional intelligence, family systems and conflict management strategies

The Center for Emotional Intelligence and Human Relations Training, a partner institution of the Center for Congregational Health®, provides intensive weeklong training in a residential setting.
