Communing: What gets in the way of communion?
dmhall | August 11, 2011

Communing—sitting with, conversing, to be or feel at one with, feeling, empathizing, communicating, and connecting. (Microsoft Word Synonyms)

Communing with others may come naturally to us in some ways, but we have gotten ourselves into such a fast paced society that we hardly take the time to commune with each other.  And we struggle to find the time to commune with God and/or the situations in our lives that weigh on and press upon us.  We are in this state of not communing, as individuals and even more so as congregations.

What would happen in our congregations if we were to put communing first, before business meetings, before worship, before educational programs, before everything that happens as a congregation?

Would it hurt us?

Would it take our focus off of sharing God’s love in the world?

Would it take us away from Christian living?

Would it impact our worship service?

What would happen if we designated time to:

  • Commune with God?
  • Commune with individuals?
  • Commune with family?
  • Commune with small groups at church?
  • Commune with leadership groups?
  • Commune as a congregation?
