The training's practical nature of providing a model for completing the Intentional Interim Ministry process (practical strategies and tools, while remaining flexible) and the insight into church systems and how they function were invaluable. The most obvious and continuing benefit to the churches I served has been the opening up of a dialogue process. Interestingly, money issues were the main symptoms in all the churches I have served, but the real issues revolved around
authoritarian leadership by pastor, staff or a group. The dialogue process interrupted this entrenched leadership and helped move the churches back to a Baptist model of Congregational Rule and the Priesthood of the Believer.

Tarrant Baptist Association has a monthly meeting for our intentional interim ministers. At December's Christmas Banquet, one of our ministers said the Intentional Interim Ministry Training was the best training he had ever received, including seminary and all other workshops. While he is twenty years my senior, I would echo those same sentiments.

YCORE: a partnership for interim ministry promoting excellence, providing accountability, and maintaining integrity

Excellence: believing that God has called them to serve as interim ministers, individuals need training to hone their existing skills as well as to aid them in developing new skills that deal with the dynamics of the transition time in a church. Two courses are designed to meet this need: Interim Ministry For Today’s Church and Intentional Interim Ministry Basic Training.

Practitioners are required to attend training updates, special forums, and leadership development opportunities, earning at least 30 contact hours (3 CEU credits) every 3 years. In addition, interim ministers are encouraged to keep current with the latest written resources.

Accountability: at the end of the interim experience, an outside facilitator holds a dialogue session with the interim minister and the Transition Team to reflect on the work that has been accomplished. The group talks about what went well, what did not go well, and what they would do differently. They also identify the strengths and gifts the interim pastor brought to the congregation, as well as the interim’s growing edges. A summary report is written by the facilitator and examined by a Regional Review Team. The nominal fee for the Reflections Session ($300) is paid by the congregation.

Integrity: it is important that all of those who have a stake in healthy congregations have confidence that the ministry promised to a congregation is what is actually delivered by the interim pastor. Consequently, membership ($40 annual fee) in YCORE is required for persons who wish to have their resumes circulated by the Center as well as many of the denominational offices. The Center keeps track of the individual records of each practitioner, making certain that the continuing education requirements and Reflections work are kept up-to-date.
